here is the first sketch :

re-drawn with Adobe Illustrator... lines, shapes, gradients, shading, patterns, patience ;) ...

and we end up on Photoshop, adding some subtle textures in the character and as a background.

As for the text, I used some cute free fonts from the great myfonts.com
